We started Ready File because the practical map kept going missing.
The legal documents were usually in order. The everyday knowledge — where things are, who does what, how the household actually runs — was not.
The observation
In almost every family, one person quietly carries the operating knowledge of the household. The bills and their due dates. Which doctor to call. Where the insurance card lives. The toddler's bedtime routine and the medication schedule. The subscriptions no one else knows about. Held together by habit, memory, and a few notes scattered across inboxes and drawers.
It works beautifully — until the moment someone needs that knowledge and can't ask the person who holds it. That's not a catastrophe scenario. It's ordinary life: an illness, a trip, a hospital stay, a separation, a move, a death. Any of these can suddenly make the invisible visible.
The gap we noticed
We've sat with families during the confusing, paperwork-heavy weeks that follow an unexpected event. The pattern was consistent: the will was signed, the power of attorney existed, the beneficiaries were named. But no one knew which pharmacy to call, where the auto insurance certificate was, how to log the household's accounts, or who the kids' emergency contacts at school were. The legal layer was complete. The practical layer was a scramble.
That gap isn't well served by existing products. Estate lawyers handle the legal layer. Password managers handle credentials. Funeral planners handle a specific event. Tax and financial advisors handle their domains. Almost no one helps a family get the practical map in order — the everyday knowledge that holds a household together.
What we built
Ready File is a modest, useful answer to that gap. We help families get the practical essentials out of one person's head and into a form the rest of the household can actually use. We do it in three ways: a free checklist to start, a DIY kit to go deeper, and a guided session for families who'd rather not start from a blank page.
Our principles
- Practical over preachy. We assume you're an adult with good intentions, not someone who needs to be scared into action.
- Your control always. Your Ready File and your sensitive information stay in your hands. We help you organize; we never hold what shouldn't be held.
- Calm, never fear-driven. This is about kindness prepared in advance, not doom.
- Honest about scope. We tell you what we do and what we don't, clearly, and refer you to professionals when it matters.
Made in Canada
Ready File is built for Canadian households first, with wording and references that fit how things work here — while remaining useful to families anywhere. We're a small, deliberate operation, building in public with our first pilot families.
